Dan Thorburn is an award winning writer and director from the North of England. Originally a painter, he studied at Central Saint Martins School of Art in London where he transitioned his practice into film. He has directed a range of successful drama gaining recognition from festivals world wide, was part of of Screen Yorkshires inaugural FLEX program, is a member of BAFTA Connect, won the Sony Future Filmmaker Award 2023 and was a cohort member of the prestigious talent lab NETWORK@LFF in 2023.

His debut feature film Barfly is currently in development with the BFI, he is working closely with producers Chris Hees and Millie Marsh and writer Jack Sherratt on the project which picked up Best Project Award at Galway Film Market 2023. Alongside this Dan is attached to direct feature film In His Place being written by Anthony Fletcher (Censor) produced by Mother Films, and is looking for production partners for his feature Wishbone and regional TV show adaptation of Salt Water Town.

His BFI NETWORK funded short films (Salt Water Town, Trucker’s Atlas), have played at festivals across the world including Raindance, Leeds International Film Festival, London Short Film Festival and The National Film Festival for Talented Youth in Seattle. As well as proceeding Ken Loach’s Sorry We Missed You for its cinematic release. Aside from his drama work, his Art Council funded triptych of contemporary dance short films exploring addiction played at Leeds International Film Festival and was well received across the global dance community.
